Scope

Publications from all disciplines — written, edited or sponsored by scholars affiliated with Kansas State University — are welcome at New Prairie Press (NPP). In addition to scholarly journals, NPP publishes conference proceedings, faculty- and staff-authored scholarly monographs, open-access textbooks, and other special publications.

Editors interested in starting or moving an open access journal, or K-State faculty and administrators exploring options for open conference proceedings or monographs, should contact the New Prairie Press team.

Copyright and Open Access

New Prairie Press is an open-access publisher, and all our publications are freely available to read and download.

Most works published on New Prairie Press are released under a Creative Commons license, which clearly defines the ways in which the material may be reused. The specific license, and the types of reuses it permits, are indicated for each publication. All Creative Commons licenses require proper attribution, including the creator’s name, source information and links to both the original work and the applicable license.

If you wish to reuse a publication in a manner not covered by its Creative Commons license, or if the work is not licensed under Creative Commons, please contact the copyright holder directly. When known, copyright owners are listed in the publication or its metadata. Any reuse of publications should include appropriate citations and a link back to the original source.

Tools, Services and Responsibilities

New Prairie Press utilizes the following publishing platforms: Janeway, Pressbooks and Fulcrum. The New Prairie Press team will work with authors and/or editors to determine the most suitable platform for each publication. The following tools and services are provided by New Prairie Press:

  • A designed site.
  • Software to manage editorial and peer-review workflows.
  • Training and technical support.
  • Registering ISBN, DOIs and other relevant identifiers.
  • Information and advice on copyright and licensing.

Optional services provided by New Prairie Press include:

  • The import and hosting of journal back issues.

Publication editor(s) are responsible for:

  • Establishing editorial, authorship and copyright policies.
  • Establishing review policies and procedures.
  • Publication administration and management, including submissions and peer review.
  • Ensuring reference lists include DOIs for journal article citations, when available.
  • Copyediting, proofreading and creating article templates.
  • Ensuring the continuity and sustainability of journals.

Author(s) are responsible for:

  • Delivering text and images in file formats and specifications requested by editors or the New Prairie Press team.
  • Obtaining permission to use copyrighted materials created by third parties.
  • Including DOIs for journal article citations in reference lists, when available.
  • Proofreading.

Costs and Fees

For journals:

There are currently no costs or fees for using New Prairie Press’ publishing services as outlined in the tools, services and responsibilities section. Additional services, as negoitiated by the Press, may incur additional fees on a cost-recovery basis.

For journal authors:

New Prairie Press journals and their independent editorial boards do not charge authors Article Processing Charges (APC) or other fees which would be associated with an article’s publication. Journals and their boards may, however, ask prospective authors to be a member of a journal’s parent society or organization in order to publish with them.

For book and conference authors:

There are currently no costs or fees for using New Prairie Press’ publishing services as outlined in the tools, services and responsibilities section. Additional services, as negoitiated by the Press, may incur additional fees on a cost-recovery basis.

Back Issues

In addition to publishing and/or hosting current and new issues of journals, New Prairie Press can import and host back issues of existing journals. A timeframe for the upload of back issues will need to be negotiated and will be dependent on the availability of resources. If there is a significant amount of content to add, funding may be requested to support the hiring of student assistants who can assist with the processing and upload of back issues.

New Prairie Press Finances

New Prairie Press is funded by Kansas State University Libraries. The Press may seek external sources of funding to support its publishing program. Participation in any funding programs does not influence editorial decisions made by New Prairie Press or the editorial boards of its publications.

Editorial Independence

Journals and conferences published with New Prairie Press are managed by independent editorial boards. New Prairie Press does not influence editorial decisions made by editorial boards.

Preservation

Select journals and conference proceedings published with New Prairie Press are preserved through K-State Libraries' digital preservation services. We encourage authors to self-archive their work published by the New Prairie Press.
